Many people have asked us to express something about composting bag that I have been using in my home. I guess the question that you might have are how did I make it, how am I using it, how effective it is and many more. So, here is a brief information about the sack compost bag that I am using. I am using a simple rice sack bag that is made from plastic and is easily found in Nepalese households. I just made some holes in it, at the close bottom half of the bag and left as it on the open half end.

To simply start the compost in the sack is the easiest way to make compost. This is simple, requires no tools and probably the other materials required are freely already available in your home. You can easily start making compost or teach someone how to make compost in garbage bag at home simply using following:

Composting in a Garbage Bag Tips:
Things that you require:
- Plastic Sack (I use 25-50 kg bag) or thick Garbage bag (30-35 Gallon bag); depends on your choice and availability.
- A Scissor
- One-part Brown Materials like dead leaves, small twigs, wood chips, coffee filters, shredded paper, cardboard or newspaper, straw, old and dried flowers
- One-part Green Materials like fruit and vegetable scraps, grass clippings, tea and coffee grounds
- Compost (Optional)
- One-part Soil
- Water enough to dampen the mixture
How to Make Compost in a Bag (Process):
- Make 15-24 holes (according to size of bag) on close half end of the bag using scissors and leave untouched the other half. Your compost bag is ready to use for home composting.
- Begin your composting process by putting brown materials in first. Make 2-5 cm thick layer of it at the bottom of the sack.
- The next thing that goes in above brown materials is green materials and cover green materials completely.
- (Optional) Above green materials if you have put some compost (150 to 250 grams) to make the composting process faster.
- Above green materials put some soil and cover it all. This will keep away the flies and other insects away and helps in composting process.
- At last water this layer so it is just damped not too wet and tie off the bag and keep it in sunny area.
- Repeat this process 3 to 4 times for one bag and check your bag compost.
- You’ll know your compost is ready to use when it becomes dark, has no remnants of food or waste and smells like fresh compost you get in nursery.
- If your compost looks unfinished and dry, water it to make damp and let it sit a bit longer in the sun or heated area.
- It could take three weeks to six weeks to produce good, usable compost using this method (depends on weather and temperature).
Composting in a Garbage Bag Tips:
- Store compost bags outdoors in the summer and in a heated basement or garage in the winter.
- Don’t put too much water in compost pile, it will slow the composting process.
- Turn your bag once every week to mix up the materials.
- Don’t add more material to your bag than its capacity, make some place to tie up the bag.
- Put one layer of composting at least after four days till the bag is at its maximum capacity.
- Be patient
