Bangkok Urban Heatwave Definition and Thresholds

The heatwave day threshold used in the analysis of urban heat resilience in Bangkok is defined by two primary criteria: a minimum duration and a minimum temperature exceedance.

Specifically, in the technical analysis (B-Kode) for the "Urban Heat Resilience: Bridging Science, Policy, and Sustainable Design" project, a heatwave is defined as:
1. Duration Criterion: A period of at least three consecutive days.
2. Temperature Criterion (Threshold): The daily mean temperatures must exceed the 95th percentile of the historical temperature distribution in the city’s coolest district.
This specific temperature threshold corresponds to a daily mean temperature of 29.8°C. The threshold was derived using historical climate data for the February to July period from 1985 to 2014.
This definition is used to quantify the three key dimensions of heatwave risk: frequency (number of heatwave days), persistence (average duration), and intensity (temperature exceedance above the threshold).
