Green Smith Nepal Calls for Urgent Action to Tackle Kathmandu's Waste and Sanitation Crisis

Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is grappling with a mounting waste and sanitation crisis that threatens public health, environmental sustainability, and the city's livability. Despite being the nation's capital and a hub for tourism and commerce, Kathmandu's waste management systems remain underdeveloped and overwhelmed.

A Growing Problem

The Kathmandu Valley generates over 1,200 metric tonnes of solid waste daily, with approximately half originating from KMC alone. The majority of this waste is organic, yet less than 10% is composted or processed. Instead, it accumulates in public spaces, clogs drains, and ends up in landfills like Sisdole, which is nearing capacity (myRepublica).

Wastewater treatment is equally concerning. Only about 3% of sewage is treated, with the rest flowing untreated into rivers such as the Bagmati, posing severe health and environmental risks (Khabarhub).

The Role of Green Smith Nepal

Green Smith Nepal, a leading environmental NGO, is committed to addressing these challenges through community-driven initiatives, policy advocacy, and sustainable waste management practices. The organization is actively engaged in promoting waste segregation at the source, supporting composting efforts, and advocating for the establishment of Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) to enhance recycling rates.

Key Initiatives and Recommendations

  • Waste Segregation and Composting: Encouraging households and businesses to separate organic waste for composting can significantly reduce landfill pressure and produce valuable organic fertilizer.

  • Infrastructure Development: Investing in MRFs and expanding composting facilities will create jobs and reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills.

  • Public Awareness Campaigns: Educating the public about the importance of waste segregation and proper disposal methods is crucial for long-term behavioral change.

  • Policy Advocacy: Collaborating with local authorities to enforce existing waste management laws and develop new policies that promote sustainability and accountability.

Call to Action

Green Smith Nepal urges all stakeholders—government agencies, private sector entities, civil society organizations, and citizens—to unite in tackling Kathmandu's waste and sanitation challenges. Only through collective action can the city hope to achieve a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future.
